Week 8: Mashups

I chose BillShrink to see if I could find a better cell phone deal. This mashup used mapping to show coverage strenght and then searched different providers.

for the Rollyo exercise, I looked at what Jenny Levine had to say about privacy in 2003. It was interesting to see that my search brought up old posts-I was expecting them to be only current posts. She mostly quoted legislation at the time pertaining to detainess in GITMO and also the TIA program being pushed by the Pentagon and CIA.

Week 7: Podcasting and Video

I liked this assignment-I think that podcasting could be helpful when explaining how to use library resources, or embedding video in a google docs presentation and posting in to our blog to use for education.

Week 6: Online photo sharing

I could see an organization using photo sharing for updates on facilities, weather, etc. kind of like a webcam. I think it would be nice (or would have been nice) for our library to have had a photostream about our weeding and renovation processes which took place over the course of the last year. A nice, visual, shareable documentary. Without a lot of work.

Week 5: Web Office Tools

I love google docs. I think this makes great sense in a larger organization or for people that are far apart but working on committees togethers. I love that there is only ONE copy of the document, but that you can see how it's grown with the changes. I love that everyone can be notified and shared with that you want to have see it. This is a must in ANY collaborative environment, I can totally see this as the near future of document sharing.

Week 4: Social Bookmarking

I like the idea of social bookmarking, especially when working on a project in groups-gathering information. We can all see the same information and be linked together by it. I'm not sure how I would use it in daily work in the library-at least as a connection with my patrons.

Web 2.0 Class Week 3

I like the idea of connecting MLA members with social networking. Unlike a listserv where an email is sent out to everyone and a few people may respond, I think it would be easier to contact people that you can search out that have like interests, situation, etc. Then you could form groups and post and respond to each other-it would feel more personal I think.

I could see using a blog in our library vs a myspace or facebook page. At least at this time I don't know that it would be a useful tool, especially considering time for staff to keep up with it. I could definitely see linking a blog off our intranet site and could see that getting use and generating contacts.

I think there are always privacy concerns on the internet, and that people should use discretion with what and how much information they want to put out there.

I liked the experience and I will definitely use one or both for personal use.

Blogs vs Wikis (for Web 2.0 class)

A blog is like an online journal-it's mine, but other people are free to read it and comment on it. A wiki is a web page that I can begin and put information on, but other people can have the opportunity (based on whether it's public or private) to change and edit and add to that information. I think work on growing and changing projects is better suited for a wiki, and I think that newsy-type information about the library and things that are going on there is more suited for a blog. I think that in our library at this time-a blog would be something that would be very useful. Right now I don't think we have the need for a wiki, but I will definitley try to use one here.

Friday again already?

So I haven't been able to post since last week. Oh, I've had the time but any other moms out there that might read this will understand when I say that I just did not have the energy or motivation.

I am that mom whose kids get everything, I swear. If someone has an ear infection, chances are it's two (at least) out of my three kids. RSV going around? Check, all three. Stomach flu? Check again, all three. My theory is that by the time my kids are in their teens they will be the ones that never get sick. I hope it pans out.

Anyway, I really am motivated to run but I am so tired that my body is shutting me down there. If any moms read this and have tips for really reigniting that fire for running and keeping it going through the exhausted days-please let me know!

Happy Easter!

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Finally Thursday!

It's almost the end of the week, but when you're a mom that doesn't really mean anything-your life still goes 100 mph on the weekends. At our house that usually starts at 6 am unfortunately for my husband and I.

And another thing.....

Being really tired and having too much access to Easter candy is not a good thing.

RSS feeds rock

I will definitely use rss for my own current awareness-both personally and professionally. I think that our patrons would really benefit from this service too-I can see though that it will be up to us to bring them into the 21st century.

Is it still Monday?

I wouldn't know. I was pretty much up all night. Who knew that the all-night partying of my 20's was really prep for all-nighters with 9 month olds?
